Why Are My Outlets Not Working? 6 Common Causes and What to Do

There’s nothing more frustrating than plugging in a device and getting no power. Whether it’s a dead outlet in the kitchen or a group of outlets not working in the living room, electrical issues like these are common — and usually fixable.

At Affordable Electric, we help homeowners across the Twin Cities quickly diagnose and repair outlet issues with safe, code-compliant solutions. Here are some of the most common reasons your outlets may not be working and what they could mean.

1. Tripped Circuit Breaker

One of the first things to check is your electrical panel. A tripped breaker can cut power to multiple outlets at once. If you see a breaker in the “off” or middle position, reset it fully. If it keeps tripping, you may have an overloaded circuit or a more serious wiring issue. An electrical panel upgrade may be necessary for older homes or homes with increasing power needs.

2. GFCI Outlet Tripped

Outlets in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor areas are often protected by GFCI outlets. These are designed to shut off power to prevent shock when moisture is present. If one of these outlets trips, it can also shut down outlets connected to it.

Try pressing the reset button on your GFCI outlet. If it doesn’t work or won’t stay reset, we can inspect or replace it.

3. Loose or Damaged Wiring

Outlets can fail because of loose wires, wear and tear, or improper installation. If an outlet feels loose, discolored, or warm to the touch, it’s best to stop using it and call a professional immediately. These signs can indicate a fire hazard.

4. Burnt or Dead Outlets

An outlet that no longer holds a plug or shows signs of blackening may be burnt out. This can be caused by age, overuse, or previous electrical surges. Burnt outlets should be replaced right away to avoid fire risks or further damage.

5. Switch-Controlled Outlets

Sometimes an outlet isn’t broken — it’s just controlled by a wall switch! Try toggling nearby switches to see if that restores power. If you’re unsure how your wiring is laid out, we can help map and label outlets for better understanding.

6. Old or Outdated Outlets

Many older homes still have two-prong outlets or outdated wiring that doesn’t meet modern safety standards. Upgrading to grounded, tamper-resistant outlets can increase safety and convenience — especially if you’re using more electronics today than when the home was built.
