Arc-fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs) are one of the most important — and most misunderstood — safety upgrades a homeowner can make. If your Minneapolis or St. Paul home was built before the early 2000s, chances are it was wired before AFCI protection was required, leaving it more vulnerable to one of the leading causes of electrical fires: arc faults.
An arc fault happens when electricity jumps between damaged, frayed, or loose wiring instead of flowing safely through the circuit. These tiny sparks can ignite nearby insulation, wood framing, or dust — often without tripping a standard circuit breaker. Common causes include:
Unlike a standard breaker, which only responds to overloads and short circuits, an AFCI breaker continuously monitors the electrical waveform for the irregular patterns that indicate an arc fault. When it detects a problem, it shuts off power to that circuit before a spark can turn into a fire.
Current electrical code requires AFCI protection in nearly all living areas of a home, including bedrooms, living rooms, family rooms, and hallways. Homes built or renovated before these code updates often have little to no AFCI coverage.
The good news: retrofitting AFCI protection doesn’t require rewiring your whole house. In most cases, our electricians can replace standard breakers with AFCI breakers directly in your existing panel, giving older homes modern fire protection without a full renovation.
Our licensed electricians can assess your current panel and recommend the right AFCI upgrades for your home. Learn more on our AFCI Protection service page, or contact us to schedule an inspection.
